Background Info
Founded more than a century ago, Tau Kappa Epsilon considers men "not for wealth, rank, or honor; but for personal worth and character." TKE includes a very diverse membership, and is the largest college fraternity in the world, with locations at more then 270 colleges and universities across the United States and Canada. Since 1899, more than 240,000 men have accepted the challenge of membership in Tau Kappa Epsilon. They are men of sterling character who have become leaders in the business and community.
Scholarship
TKE expects serious attention to academic performance. A strong academic record not only prepares a student for success after graduation, but it represents strength of mind to the world. TKE helps our members excel in their academic life and helps them graduate.
Character
Generations of men have become successful in life through their experiences in Tau Kappa Epsilon. TKE teaches the basic principles of effective living such as integrity, honesty, and patience, which are core values in our Fraternity.
Leadership
TKE offers young men the opportunity to develop as leaders and prepares them to use those leadership skills throughout their lifetime. Tekes are encouraged to take and active leadership role in community, campus, and chapter activities. Studies show that 46% of U.S. senators and 31% of U.S. representatives are fraternity or sorority members.
Teamwork
Tau Kappa Epsilon believes that the backbone of a successful team is based on building relationships, and developing strong interpersonal ties. TKE helps our members reach their full potential, and achieve a level of excellence in athletics, Fraternity business, campus activities, or anything else they do.
Service
TKE is committed to instilling a sense of responsibility and contribution in all of our members. The Fraternity encourages members to provide service to their campus and community through national philanthropic activities. Fraternities and sororities contribute countless hours and raise millions of dollars for charitable organizations around the world.
Brotherhood
In Tau Kappa Epsilon more than 226,000 men have established solid friendships that last a lifetime. Tekes around the world act as a network of friends, which can be beneficial, both personally and professionally. Stated in our Declaration of Principles, "We believe that the essential elements of true brotherhood are love, charity, and esteem."
Our Story
On the cold night of January 10, 1899, students of Illinois Wesleyan University in the small Midwestern town of Bloomington had just returned from the Christmas holidays when Joseph L. Settles went to the room occupied by James C. McNutt and Clarence A. Mayer at 504 East Locust Street to propound organization of a new society on campus. Joined immediately by Owen I. Truitt and Roy C.Atkinson, these five men then drew up the first set of regulations for the Knights of Classic Lore, a society whose avowed purpose was "to aid college men in mental, moral, and social development." This organization would eventually become Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity, and has grown into the world's largest social fraternity.

On or near January 10th of each year, undergraduate and alumni chapters of Tau Kappa Epsilon celebrate the founding of our Fraternity and honor the five Founders. This day, known as Founders' Day, is usually celebrated by a traditional banquet. At this celebration, contributions are collected for the Founders' Student Loan Fund, and the Grand Prytanis sends a subtle message to each chapter to be read as part of the program.
